Alabama’s Republican primary for AG is headed to a June 16 runoff between Katherine Robertson and former Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell after neither cleared 50% Tuesday night. Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey was eliminated.
Robertson led the field with 40.5% of the vote, pulling 189,175 votes.
Mitchell finished second with 34.4% and 160,613 votes.
Casey earned 25.1% with 116,930 votes.
The result sets up a one-on-one showdown between two candidates who have waged one of the most bruising primaries in recent Alabama memory. The race featured attack ads branding Mitchell a “weak fraud,” a formal retraction demand under Alabama’s libel statute, and millions in spending from both campaigns.
Robertson served nearly a decade as chief counsel to outgoing Attorney General Steve Marshall and previously worked as a top staffer to then-U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions. Marshall endorsed her as his successor. She also carried the NRA’s backing and endorsements from more than 25 Alabama sheriffs.
Mitchell practiced law for 16 years at Maynard Cooper & Gale before winning election to the Alabama Supreme Court in 2018. He resigned from the bench last May after nearly seven years to run for attorney general. A Mobile native, Mitchell was endorsed by the Business Council of Alabama and more than 20 police chiefs.
The Alabama AG runoff is set for Tuesday, June 16. The winner will face Democrat Jeff McLaughlin, a former state representative from Guntersville, in the November 3 general election.
Voters who pulled a Republican ballot Tuesday or who did not vote in the primary are eligible to vote in the runoff.
