What began as a routine traffic stop in Ozark earlier this month turned into a bootlegger’s worst nightmare when police uncovered 81 gallons of illegal moonshine packed inside a vehicle.
According to a press release issued January 20, Officer Dylan Griffin with the department’s Crime Suppression Unit conducted a traffic enforcement stop on January 9 for a traffic violation. During the stop, Griffin observed multiple containers of a clear liquid in plain view, which was later identified as moonshine.
Police identified the driver as 61-year-old Learndis Hamilton, who was traveling from Florida to an unknown destination at the time of the stop. Hamilton was the sole occupant of the vehicle, according to the department.
The department stated Hamilton was arrested, and further investigation has been turned over to the Alabama Beverage Control Board.
The department noted that possession of large quantities of illegally distilled liquor is prohibited under Alabama law.
