The National Federation of Independent Businesses’ (NFIB) state director in Alabama says small business owners in the state are closely watching the ongoing U.S. Senate runoff races in Georgia to determine if the Senate will remain hospitable to small businesses.
Rosemary Elebash, NFIB State director for Alabama said in a release Monday, “Small business owners need a business-friendly Senate to stop tax increases, increasing the federal minimum wage and restoring the individual mandate for health insurance premiums.”
At the national level, NFIB has endorsed the Republican candidates — Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler — in the two crucial runoff elections.
The NFIB is a preeminent advocacy organization on behalf of small American companies. It has a presence in Washington, D.C. and all 50 state capitals.
“Small business owners here are tracking the outcome of the Georgia U.S. Senate races. The outcome of those races will determine U.S. Senate committee chairs, and the chairs will control the agenda,” Elebash explained with respect to the NFIB members in the Yellowhammer State.
Her comments accompanied a release of fresh data from the NFIB on how small business owners are feeling about the economy. The data showed mixed results among the nation’s proprietors.
Notably, the owners expecting better business conditions over the next six months declined 19 points from the previous month. The full report on the data can be accessed here.
“Small business owners are still facing major uncertainties, including the COVID-19 crisis and the upcoming Georgia runoff election, which is shaping how they’re viewing future business conditions,” said NFIB chief economist Bill Dunkelberg in a release.
“The recovery will remain uneven as long as we see state and local mandates that target business conditions and disproportionately affect small businesses,” he added.
