Murder suspect captured after high-speed chase on I-65 in Alabama ends in Baldwin County

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has launched an investigation following a multi-agency pursuit and subsequent arrest of a suspect wanted for murder in Georgia.

According to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, the incident began on May 18 when officers with the Evergreen Police Department attempted to make contact with 28-year-old Mike Thomas of Stockbridge, Georgia.

Officers had received information that Thomas was wanted for murder and attempted to stop him on Interstate 65 in Conecuh County. Thomas reportedly refused to stop, prompting a pursuit involving multiple agencies.

The pursuit ended in Baldwin County near the 45 mile marker on Interstate 65 after law enforcement deployed spike strips to disable the suspect’s vehicle. Thomas then allegedly exited his vehicle and attempted to carjack another vehicle that was stopped in traffic. After the failed carjacking, he fled on foot into a wooded area.

An extensive manhunt followed, involving ALEA’s Aviation Unit, the Alabama Department of Corrections K-9 Team, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Special Operations Unit, and other agencies. Thomas was eventually located, taken into custody, and transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

The investigation is ongoing, and findings will be turned over to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office.
