‘Oscars of Teaching’: Mobile teacher honored with prestigious national award

A fifth-grade teacher at Gilliard Elementary in Mobile recently received one of the highest honors in education, the prestigious Milken Educator Award.

Mary Travis was surprised with the award during an assembly, assuming that she was attending a routine school event. Instead, she found herself in the spotlight as state officials, students, and fellow educators celebrated her exceptional contributions to the classroom.

The Milken Educator Award, often referred to as the “Oscars of Teaching,” recognizes teachers who demonstrate innovation, passion, and a remarkable impact on their students. Travis was the only educator in Alabama to receive the honor in 2024, joining an elite group of just 42 teachers from the state who have been recognized since Alabama’s participation in the program began in 1998.

As the announcement was made, the packed gym burst into applause and cheers.  Travis, dressed as the school mascot, stood there stunned and emotional as her peers and students celebrated her well-deserved recognition. Those who are familiar with her teaching style described it as dynamic. Travis is beloved for creating engaging, hands-on learning experiences that spark curiosity and inspire her students to excel in math, science, and beyond.

Along with the national recognition, the award also comes with a $25,000 cash prize—no strings attached. Travis can use the funds however she chooses, making it both a professional and personal reward.

In addition to the financial bonus, Travis is now part of a national network of more than 3,000 Milken Educators. The network offers valuable opportunities for professional development, and collaboration, and shares top educational practices with some of the leading educators in the country.
