“I think precinct by precinct, you will see that, overall, it’s down in all precincts,” said MPD Chief William Jackson. “There are some precincts that see a higher degree of certain types of calls than others, but in general, as a city, we are down.”
Violent crime overall was reduced by more than 11% when comparing 2023 to 2024. Additionally, since 2022, the City of Mobile has seen a 20% reduction in the category. Over the last ten years, violent crime in the city has been slashed by more than 56%.
Crimes where someone shot into a vehicle or dwelling went down by 42%. Rapes were reduced by over 28%, robberies were down by 15%, and aggravated assaults, almost 10%.
“You’re talking about your homicides, your rapes, your robberies, you aggravated assaults,” the chief told NBC 15. “It does extend into burglary and robbery and theft and things of that nature as well.”
One area, however, has not improved.
“Domestic violence, in all categories. Whether you’re talking about domestic violence in homicides, robberies, assaults, or the traditional fight between parties, it’s really driving the crime numbers.”
Jackson expressed pride in the department’s leadership for their role in the statistical improvements.
“The men and women, every day, the commanders of the precincts, they take it personally. I couldn’t be more proud of all of them because this is their city as well,” he said. “They don’t just come to work here; this is their city as well, and they want to make it the safest city.”
