On Sunday morning, Mobile Mayor Sam Jones took a shot at Sandy Stimpson, his competitor in the upcoming Mobile mayoral election set for Tuesday.
One of the signs held up at a Saturday rally for Stimpson said “Keep King’s Dream Alive.” Jones responded with a racially charged response on Facebook calling the sign “a mockery” to Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream.

Candace Cooksey, a spokeswoman for the Stimpson campaign, offered Yellowhammer News a statement, noting that the sign was created by a Stimpson supporter to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 march on Washington.
“Saturday, hundreds of people gathered at Ladd Peebles Stadium to support Sandy and rally together before going out into their communities to wave signs and show a united front for this campaign,” Cooksey said. “We could not gather as ‘One Mobile’ without recognizing the impact that Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. had on our nation, in the weekend leading up to the 50th ‘dream’ anniversary. One of our supporters, Monique Rogers, created the signs on behalf of the campaign.”
She reiterated the Stimpson campaign’s goal of uniting Mobile under the “One Mobile” mantra.
“From the beginning of this campaign we have committed to bringing Mobile together,” she continued. “We knew it wouldn’t always be easy and that some would try to stand in the way. However, we are still committed to creating ‘One Mobile’ and nothing will deter us from that goal.”
