The City of Mobile is getting a very exciting addition next year with the return of professional hockey via the Southern Professional Hockey League, and the announcement has come down that the team will be playing under a familiar name.

During an event announcing the name of the team at the Mobile Convention Center, Mobile mayor Spiro Cheriogotis broke the news that the team would be adopting the same name of the squad that spent seven seasons in the Port City in the 1990s and early 2000s.

“I could not be more excited that Mobile’s newest professional sports franchise will go by a familiar name – the Mysticks!” Cheriogotis said. “This is incredible for our city, for the new Regions Arena and for local sports fans. I can’t wait for the puck to drop. Go Mysticks!”

Regions Arena — which is replacing the Mobile Civic Center and is expected to open for Mardi Gras season in 2027 — will be the home of the new team which will drop the puck in fall of 2027.

“As excitement builds at Regions Arena, we look forward to welcoming Mysticks fans and delivering the ultimate hockey experience for players, fans, and partners,” said general manager Erik Hudson at the event. “Hockey is steeped in tradition, and the Mysticks are the right anchor tenant for Regions Arena. We aim to blend the legacy of the early Mysticks with new traditions from Mobile, building the SPHL’s best fan base and hockey city.”
