None of the Republican members of Alabama’s U.S. House delegation have indicated that they’ll be signing on to the idea of using Congress’ federal budget powers to defund ObamaCare. In fact, the conservative Heritage Foundation recently launched an ad campaign targeting a handful those Republicans nationally, including five of the state’s six Republicans locally.
One member of Alabama’s congressional delegation who won’t be hit by those ads is Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Huntsville. But Brooks has a different idea on how to handle ObamaCare funding, and it doesn’t involve the threat of shutting down the government. In an interview that aired on Huntsville NBC affiliate WAFF on Tuesday evening, Brooks proposed tying ObamaCare funding cuts proportionally to cuts the administration has allowed to be made to the U.S. military.
“I’m comfortable that if we were to pass a funding bill for the federal government that included a proportionate cut to Obamacare — 15 percent, which is what the president has demanded of national defense, that seems only fair given our deficit and debt situation,” Brooks said.
The representative for Alabama’s military-heavy 5th congressional district went on to emphasize his opposition to sequestration, explaining that the longer it goes, the more it will hurt national security.
“Each year that this progresses, the more adverse effect it has on national security,” he said. “That’s why I’ve been trying to reverse sequestration every chance I get and that’s why I voted against it in the first instance.”
