Mo Brooks applauds President Trump for trying to end birthright citizenship

President Donald Trump has tossed out his own personal “October Surprise” in the form of an idea to reign in birthright citizenship for the children of illegal aliens. The caravan, which media outlets are now declaring “doesn’t exist,” is still slowly plodding its way towards the United States’ border.

Illegal immigration is the number one Trump issue tracking all the way back to the day he descended down the escalator in 2015. This is obviously a political play to the Trump base and something that is being used to turn out Republican voters, but that does not mean that it is an idea without merit. The United States is one of 33 countries that currently offer citizenship this way and Canada is the only other developing nation that allows such a thing.

Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-Huntsville) told WVNN radio this morning that he believes the move by the president is one that is not only necessary, but also that the president should be lauded for taking the step.
“I applaud President Trump for expressing a willingness to try to do something about this huge border security problem that we have,” Brooks stated on “The Dale Jackson Show.” “Again, one of the pieces of candy that’s out there that the illegal aliens grab for is the birthright citizenship and then the years and years and years of welfare benefits that the parents of those illegal alien children get.”

Brooks also said he believes this is a sovereignty and security issue.

He explained, “We should be using as many military personnel as are necessary to secure our borders. If you do not have border security you are not a sovereign nation, and so defending borders is the number one goal of the U.S. military because that’s defending the homeland. But let me kind of put this caravan into perspective. On a weekly basis last year you had about this number of people coming into the United States of America illegally. Roughly 10,000 per week came in illegally in ones and twos and fives and tens and fifties and whatever — not all in mass as this caravan is. Where they’re really thumbing their nose at the sovereign to the United States and the laws of America.”

The debate on this issue will rage for days. Is it even possible for the president to do this? Does an 1898 ruling have applicability in 2018? Will the newly conservative Supreme Court decide this?

The answers will not be decided before next Tuesday, but all the players will attempt to use this talk as a political weapon.
