Mike Durant, Republican candidate for Alabama’s open U.S. Senate seat, on Wednesday announced his support for a constitutional amendment instituting term limits for members of Congress.
Throughout his campaign, the U.S. Army veteran has taken aim at who he refers to as “career politicians,” vowing to challenge the existing condition of Capitol Hill.
In announcing his signing of the U.S. term limits pledge, Durant took a shot at GOP primary opponents U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) and Katie Britt, who formerly served as chief of staff for retiring U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala).
“Washington is full of a bunch of corrupt lying politicians who will do anything to live off the public and get rich off us,” proclaimed Durant. “The last thing we need is another career politician like Congressman Brooks or Chief of Staff Katie Boyd Britt in the Senate where they will serve until they die or are defeated. They’re cut from the same cloth as the career politician in the White House – politicians who have never held a real job and haven’t had to live in the real world.”
While on the campaign trail, Durant, a first-time candidate for public office, has routinely invoked the successful 2020 senatorial candidacy of U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala). Durant has asserted that his positioning as a “political outsider” makes his candidacy appealing to the Republican base.
“We need more political outsiders like myself, President Trump and Coach Tuberville to shake up Washington and change business as usual,” added Durant. “I’m running to serve another tour as the socialist left threatens the values and future of our country. I’ll do my job and come back home – like the founders of our country intended.”
The U.S. term limits pledge affirms a candidate’s support for a constitutional amendment prohibiting U.S. representatives from serving more than three terms and U.S. senators from holding office no longer than two terms.
The primary election is scheduled to take place on May 24, 2022.
