In the early hours of Memorial Day, a driver in Montgomery County experienced an extraordinary traffic incident involving an alligator.
According to WSFA News 12, Waugh/Mt. Meigs Volunteer Fire Department emergency responders were dispatched around 3:20 a.m. to the intersection of Wares Ferry Road and Edna Brake Lucas Drive, after receiving a call about a vehicle striking an alligator crossing the road.
The driver, who suffered minor injuries, was traveling toward Interstate 85 when the collision occurred. The vehicle was deemed a total loss and required towing. The alligator died at the scene.
A firefighter who responded to the incident remarked on its rarity to WSFA.
“I have never seen this, and can say the same for those who responded. We frequently see deer versus cars, and I have even seen cows that get out and cause accidents, but definitely never a car that ran into an alligator.”
The Waugh/Mt. Meigs Volunteer Fire Department shared pictures of the alligator in a Facebook post.
