Mark Spurlin announces candidacy for Pike Road Mayor, challenging incumbent Gordon Stone

Local builder and entrepreneur Mark Spurlin has officially announced his candidacy for Mayor of Pike Road in the upcoming 2025 Municipal Election. Spurlin will face longtime incumbent Mayor Gordon Stone, who has held the office since 2004. The election is scheduled for August 26, 2025.

Spurlin, a Montgomery native, brings a background in landscape architecture and building construction to the race. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Mississippi State University and a Master’s in Building Construction from Auburn University. Together with his wife Jessica, Spurlin runs two small businesses—Mark Spurlin Construction Co. and Jessica Spurlin Interiors—focused on local renovation and regional residential interior design.

In his candidacy announcement, Spurlin expressed concern about Pike Road’s rapid growth and the need for a more intentional approach to development.

“Pike Road is filled with great people– families, retirees, and single adults,” Spurlin said. “Our town has seen impressive, attention-grabbing growth over the last few years, but unfortunately, our response to that fast-paced growth has become haphazard and lacking in intentionality. In recent years, this momentum has shifted to an undeniable concern of many. The time to reevaluate the future of Pike Road as a community and come forth with a fresh, objective perspective is now.”

Spurlin emphasized a vision for the town rooted in long-term planning and collaboration.

“Our town deserves leadership that is focused on the long-term future, and through my experiences, interests, and talents, I believe I can serve as a catalyst to achieve practical, yet creative solutions. I am committed to providing a fresh perspective that will help us meet the challenges of growth while embracing our citizens and building upon the unique qualities that make Pike Road special. By working together, we can build a lasting future that reflects our community’s values and improves the quality of life for all residents.”

He also highlighted his belief in uniting the community through effective leadership.

“I believe a good leader utilizes individuals’ best qualities for a common goal,” said Spurlin. “By improving collaboration and communication with our citizens, we will build a stronger community. I want Pike Road to be a premier place where current and future residents are proud to call home. I want our town to have its own unique identity and be a place where residents can thrive, businesses are positioned to shine, and our skills and talents can be brought forth for the greater good of the community.”

The candidate qualifying period, set for July 7 through July 21, 2025, could expand the field, but for now, the race is shaping up to be a contest between Spurlin and incumbent Gordon Stone.

Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.
