Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox has appointed Dr. Richard Rush to lead the city’s Government Relations, External Affairs, and Crisis Communication initiatives, effective July 1.
Rush currently serves as the Executive Director of Strategic Communications for Tuscaloosa and has been in that role since 2019. He brings nearly 20 years of experience across public, private, and academic sectors to his expanded responsibilities.
“Dr. Rush is a dedicated public servant, with a true gift of uniting stakeholders to find common ground,” said Maddox. “Tuscaloosa’s future is tied directly to the work of the Alabama Legislature and other key constituencies. Dr. Rush’s ability to communicate with purpose makes him the right person to work with our local and state leaders on the Simplified Sales Tax, Tuscaloosa National Airport, and other strategic issues. I’m proud of Richard and honored to be his colleague.”

In his new position, Rush will focus on strengthening Tuscaloosa’s relationships at the local and state levels, supporting the city’s strategic priorities, and engaging in broader policy discussions. During his time with the City, Rush has played a significant role in enhancing partnerships with local businesses and community groups while also representing Tuscaloosa on various civic boards and committees.
“I’m honored to step into this new role and to continue to have the opportunity to serve the City of Tuscaloosa,” said Rush. “Tuscaloosa is a place of vision, resilience, and opportunity—and I look forward to strengthening the relationships and partnerships that move our city forward.”
