Left-wing extremist bomber of Alabama Attorney General’s office given additional ten years on top of nine year federal sentence

A man responsible for placing and detonating an improvised explosive device outside of the Alabama Attorney General’s Office has had ten more years added to his already nine-year sentence from the federal government for the same crime.

Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert of Irondale was first arrested in April 2024 and charged with one count of Arson in the Second Degree and one count of Possession of an Explosive Device. Following his arrest, Calvert was brought up on federal charges and pleaded guilty. He admitted during the plea hearing to building the device filled with shrapnel.

After the federal government sentenced Calvert, Alabama then tried him on a state level.

Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the news on Friday and praised the decision to continue holding Calvert accountable for his criminal actions.

“Mr. Calvert did not simply set off an explosive device at an office building—he attacked the state of Alabama and the freedom, liberty, and rule of law that govern all Alabama citizens,” said Marshall. “The Attorney General’s Office is home to nearly two hundred dedicated employees who work tirelessly for this state. They deserve to perform their duties without fear for their safety.”

“Today’s sentencing sends a clear message: terrorism against the people of Alabama will not be tolerated.”

Prior to the explosion, Calvert placed stickers with graphics including phrases like “Support your local Antifa” on other buildings in the area of the AG’s office. In his plea agreement, Calvert claimed no affiliation with the group.

Marshall thanked the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and the special agents of the Alabama Attorney General’s Office for their work in investigating and apprehending Calvert.
