Republican voters in east Alabama’s House District 38 will return to the polls next month after no candidate cleared 50% in Tuesday’s special GOP primary.

With all precincts reporting, unofficial returns showed Kristin Nelson at 46.8% with 1,226 votes, Garrett Dixon at 33.38% with 847 votes, and Micah Messer at 20% with 526 votes, eliminating him from the race.

The primary runoff will be held Tuesday, November 18, which will effectively decide the next State Representative for the Chambers and Lee County district.

The vacancy arose when former State Rep. Debbie Wood (R-Valley) resigned this summer after relocating for her husband’s job.

“The people of House District 38 showed up in a big way today. I’m incredibly grateful for everyone’s continued support and encouragement during this campaign. But we’re not done yet,” Nelson said in a statement after votes were counted.

“House District 38 deserves someone in Montgomery who will put their best foot forward and protect our conservative values. On November 18th, we’ll see you at the ballot box again, and I look forward to being your conservative voice in Montgomery.”

Nelson, the Chambers County Republican Party chair, entered the race in June. Dixon, a farmer and small-business owner, launched his bid in August and won backing from Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth and the Business Council of Alabama.

“Thank you to everyone who voted and helped us advance to the November 18 runoff. Running for House District 38 has been a great experience, and I’m grateful for the strong support we’ve received,” Dixon said Tuesday night.

“My wife, Robin, and I are raising our two children right here at home. Like so many families, we’ve felt the impact of higher prices and rising crime. I’m running because Montgomery needs leaders who will keep Alabama safe, affordable, and a place where families can build a future. As our representative, I will cut taxes, raise standards in our schools, and ensure law enforcement has the support they need to protect every neighborhood,” Dixon said.

Shannon Whitt, a top official with the Alabama Republican Party, congratulated all three candidates for a “strong and spirited campaign.”

“Today’s results reflect the continued engagement of Republican voters in East Alabama. The upcoming runoff on November 18 will allow voters to select the nominee who will best represent their values and serve their community with dedication.”
