Katie Britt says Durant’s gun comments were ‘disgusting and dangerous’ — ‘Disarming the U.S. citizens would not be a good step toward law and order’

Comments by Senate candidate Mike Durant from a 2011 speech in front of the U.S. Army War College are still causing controversy in the U.S. Senate race.

During the speech, Durant said “[F]rom a military perspective, the first thing that needs to be done is disarm the population. Let’s face it, if we could do that in some of our U.S. cities, that would be a pretty good step toward law and order.”

Durant has since defended himself saying those comments were “mischaracterized” and he supports the Second Amendment, but his opponents aren’t buying his defense.

Wednesday on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program,” Senate candidate Katie Britt said the comments were “disgusting and dangerous” and discussed why she believed Durant was wrong on the Second Amendment.

“Well, first, those comments are disgusting and dangerous,” she exclaimed, “and no, Mr. Durant, disarming the U.S. citizens would not be a good step toward law and order.”

Britt explained why she believed the right to bear arms was necessary in a free country.

“Many people talk about it for hunting and protection, which are both critically important,” she explained, “but the Second Amendment is there to protect against tyranny of the government, you know, and the way that we do that is we arm law abiding Americans. It is part of what makes this nation so great.”

The Senate candidate also talked about how the left continues to threaten the gun rights of Americans.

“Liberals want to disarm the population,” she said, “and it looks to really govern through fear and control, and without firearms, there’s opportunity for them to continue to be able to take away our freedoms and liberties. So, we have to stand firm with the Second Amendment, and stand firm and know that where it says ‘shall not be infringed’ it means it. Those words mean something and I will fight every day to protect the Second Amendment.”

Britt also believes that President Joe Biden is overreaching and using “ghost guns” as an excuse to push more gun control.

“That’s exactly what it is, it’s an excuse,” she continued, “and absolutely I would fight back against that. The government overreach that we continue to see from the Biden administration and the continual targeting of law abiding, hard working Americans is disgusting. I mean, we’ve seen this time and time again and this is no exception.”

She said Biden should spend more time going after lawbreakers instead of law abiding citizens.

“That’s exactly what he’s doing here,” she said. “Instead of going after criminals and terrorists, you know, he wants to find a way to continue to target law abiding Americans, and we have to find a way to continue to stand up against his overreach and these things that are just fundamentally un-American and against our Constitution.”
