U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) thinks there is a good chance the Republican Party will win back the majority in the U.S. Senate this year, but admits that they’re not taking anything for granted.
Thirty-four seats are up grabs in the election this year, and the GOP expects to flip many of those seats red because of the current electoral map.
Britt discussed the Senate elections Friday on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program.”
“We need to make sure that we don’t take anything for for granted, and that we continue to knock on doors and make phone calls,” Britt said. “Look, we need everyone everywhere doing everything they can, because this is the moment for us to take our country back. We know that we need a secure border. We know that we want to maintain or create a more peaceful structure across the globe. We know what this feels like here at home. So now is the time to keep working. Trump is ahead, but it’s nothing we should take for granted when you’re looking at the Senate. I mean, this is a big deal.”
The senator thinks this is a unique opportunity for the party that might not come again for a few years.
“This year is a year for Republicans. It’s time,” she argued. “We not only need to win the Senate, but if we don’t do it in this one, the map gets more challenging for us for the remainder of the decade. We have to hold every seat that we have.”
Britt has been showing her support and campaigning with some of the more vulnerable Senate candidates including U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
“Ted won the last election by 2.6 percentage points. Chuck Schumer has said he is my target. That’s who I’m going after,” Britt said. “They’re pouring a ton of money in against Ted. That’s why I was proud to host him here in Alabama. Raise him a quarter of a million dollars. I have plans to be out in Texas with him, you know, campaigning and working diligently. We’re working through all the details of that. So we got to make sure that we get Ted across the finish line.”
Britt emphasized the need for Republicans to take back the upper chamber to help prevent the Democrats from implementing a radical agenda.
“The Senate is the safety net,” she argued. “That is where every judge is confirmed, every Cabinet position. That is where Chuck Schumer and Democrats like Kamala Harris have said, ‘We will break the filibuster,’ so that they can pack the Supreme Court, make DC a state, federalize elections, so that they will outlaw actually having voter ID requirements there the ballot box to protect your vote. So, I mean, what will happen will be just tremendously terrible for our nation. If Democrats control the Senate and do what they say they’re going to do, it will set us back significantly. So it’s a big night, and I feel good about where we are.”
