Katie Britt on Texas floods: ‘Now is the time to come together as a nation, but instead, Democrats’ immediate reaction was to cast blame. This is not normal’

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) is condemning many of her colleagues on the other side of the aisle for using the recent tragedy in Texas as a political weapon against President Donald Trump.

The death toll rose to 173 people Wednesday from catastrophic flooding of the Guadalupe River, which rose more than 26 feet in less than an hour early Friday morning, sweeping away homes, cars, trees, and much of Camp Mystic — an all-girls’ Christian summer camp near Hunt, Texas.

Sarah Marsh, and 8-year old of Mountain Brook, was among those killed in the natural disaster.

Some Democratic lawmakers, including U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), have been arguing that the Trump administration’s cuts to the federal workforce are partially responsible for the deaths.

Britt reacted to those claims on on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” Tuesday.

“I think what these families need are our prayers, our compassion, our love and support,” Britt said. “And the fact that Democrats would come in and try to make this political, try to take the moment away from grieving and healing and make it so vicious is absolutely despicable.”

The senator believes the heated rhetoric around issues like this “has got to stop.”

“And so, the fact that Democrats want to find some way to make this about Donald Trump, to take this moment and make it political, it’s got to stop,” she argued.

“This nation has to heal and behavior like this and antics like this have no place in America. And I hope that every one of them that have said these awful, deranged things um look in the mirror and realize that’s not who we are as Americans and that’s certainly not what these parents and families need. There will be time and there absolutely will be to figure out exactly what happened and what we can do to prevent this in the future. And I think every one of us are committed to that. But right now, we’re committed to those grieving the loss of loved ones and those still searching for the ones that they love so dearly.”

Britt said that she hopes Democrats can look past their absolute hatred of the current President when it comes to responding to natural disasters.

“You know, and I think it shows that Trump derangement syndrome is real when you take such a tragedy and a terrible moment like this and you don’t want to do anything but turn it into something for your own political gain,” she said. “Not everything has to be political. There will be time for us to figure out how we can do better and do more and prevent these tragedies in the future. And what they don’t realize is their toxicity is not normal. And it is not something that we should tolerate in the United States of America.”
