Alabama lawmakers ‘disgusted’ by reports of FEMA bias against Trump supporters

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) criticized the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) over reports of an agency supervisor telling relief workers to “avoid homes advertising Trump.”

According to the Daily Wire, FEMA supervisor Marn’i Washington told workers to skip homes with Trump yard signs as they traveled through Lake Placid, Florida looking for residents who possibly qualify for federal aid after Hurricane Milton struck the state.

“If natural disasters don’t discriminate, neither should FEMA,” Rogers said on X. “As a native Alabamian and staunch Trump supporter, I have seen the devastation that can be caused in an instant by a natural disaster and I am disgusted by this behavior.”

Last week, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) also said he was disgusted by the report.

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) also reacted to the report earlier this week and demanded answers from Dept. of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“I am writing to express my outrage with recent press reports that, in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton in Florida, a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) supervisor instructed relief workers to bypass houses displaying support for President Trump,” Britt said in a letter to Mayorkas.” It is simply outrageous that any FEMA personnel, let alone a supervisor, would condition aid to victims based on their political views.”

“I appreciate that Administrator Criswell has condemned these actions and fired the supervisor, but the American people need answers regarding how this happened and if anyone else was complicit, as well as assurance it will not happen again,” Britt added.

The Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security has jurisdiction over FEMA. Congress is expected to consider multi-agency supplemental funding in the coming weeks in order for federal disaster relief to continue to be available to Americans impacted by presidentially declared disasters, including those recovering from Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
