As the ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ continues to make its way through Congress, U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) believes one of the most important priorities needs to be extending President Trump’s tax cuts.
The U.S. House Ways and Means Committee released their plan this week, which includes extending those cuts, while also adding tax cuts on tips and overtime pay. This is just a small step to making it law as eventually the Senate will have to approve any spending bill.
Britt discussed the latest about the spending bill during a Wednesday appearance on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program.”
“You’ll hear a lot about the extension of the TCJA, that’s the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, that’s Trump in his first term, which was passed in in 2017, obviously we’ll be working to extend those cuts,” Britt said. “If we don’t do that, that will ultimately be about a $4 trillion tax increase in 2026 on the American people. So we have to extend these.”
Britt explained how those tax increases would impact Alabamians directly.
“We looked at the Alabama numbers specifically,” she explained. “And if these aren’t extended, that would mean every Alabama [taxpayer], on average, their taxes would increase $2,192. I mean, that is actual insanity. So we’ve got to make sure that we make those permanent, and then look for ways that we can help hard working people.”
While cutting tax is a major priority in the bill, Britt also believes there needs to be a real attempt at cutting spending.
“Obviously, we are looking for ways to ultimately cut spending in the midst of all of this, which is critically important,” Britt argued.
“We’re almost $36 trillion and moving almost to $37 trillion in debt…that’s not just, you know, fiscally irresponsible, it is morally irresponsible. And we have a moment in time where we can rein that in…You’ve seen this through cutting waste, fraud and abuse…we know that those those dollars are not ours. Those are hard earned dollars of taxpayers that they’re entrusting to the government to be spent wisely for the greater good. And so making sure we’re doing that is important.”
Britt said she is ultimately in favor of support the president’s agenda.
“We are working diligently to be able to execute the vision that President Trump put before the American people, that they spoke loud and clear and said, ‘This is what we want. This is the direction we want our country,’” she said.
“And we want a secure border. We want safer streets. We want a strong defense, because we believe in peace through strength. We want to unleash American energy. We want to actually support our farming community, knowing that they feed and clothe America. We want to create a tax structure that helps those that are working to achieve the American dream, and that’s exactly what this bill does.”
