Jefferson County Constable Robert de Buys posted a photo to Facebook on Election Night of dozens of Alabama’s new “I Voted” stickers arranged on a dining table to spell “8647,” numbers the U.S. Department of Justice charged former FBI Director James Comey with using as a threat to kill President Donald Trump.
“Voting like ****ler is on the ballot,” de Buys wrote above the photo at 8:58 p.m. Tuesday, about two hours after Alabama’s polls closed. He tagged the United States Department of Justice and the FBI in the post.
The “****ler” portmanteau is a slur used by Trump critics combining an obscenity with Adolf Hitler’s name.
De Buys is an elected peace officer.
Constables and sheriffs are the only two elected peace officers left in Alabama, according to the Alabama Constable Association, and Jefferson County lists de Buys as its constable for District 48.
He was elected in November 2024 with 97.6% of the vote in a race with no other candidate on the ballot and took office in January 2025.
His term runs through January 2029. He was born in Mountain Brook, graduated from UAB in 2008 and describes himself as a small business owner.
“86” is restaurant slang for getting rid of something. Merriam-Webster notes a newer sense of the word meaning “to kill.” Trump is the 47th president.
Comey posted a photo of seashells arranged as “86 47” in May 2025 and deleted it after the Secret Service opened an investigation. A federal grand jury in North Carolina indicted him in April on two counts: making threats to kill or harm the President and transmitting those threats across state lines on social media. Comey has pleaded not guilty.
De Buys built his version out of Alabama’s America 250 “I Voted” sticker, which Secretary of State Wes Allen unveiled last month for the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.
The sticker features an outline of the state, “Sweet Home Alabama,” “I Voted” and “Celebrating 250 Years of Independence.” Poll workers hand each voter one sticker after casting a ballot.
The photo shows dozens.
De Buys did not say where he got them.
