The college football calendar has heated up, and after a lean schedule last week, the first weekend of November brings not only the slate of the season, but maybe even the slate of the last several seasons.
In this state, the Alabama Crimson Tide have a huge road trip at LSU in Baton Rouge while the Auburn Tigers will host the lowly Arkansas Razorbacks and try to get back on track. Outside of the state though, both in the SEC and around the nation, it’s an absolutely massive grouping of games with top-ten and ranked matchups galore.
Here are the five games you need to be paying attention to outside of the state of Alabama.
No. 9 BYU @ No. 3 Utah: 11:00 a.m. CST
In one of the more underrated rivalries in all of college football known as the “Holy War,” this is the first time in the history of the game that it is going to be a top-10 matchup. The Utes are undefeated and while the Cougars did take a loss to Central Florida, they also have one of the best wins of the season having beaten Notre Dame.
This is a massive game in the Big 12 standings, and if Utah can win at home, it’s another step towards locking down a first round bye in the College Football Playoff.
No. 7 Texas @ No. 18 Missouri: 11:00 a.m. CST
This has the potential to be an elimination game with both teams at two losses and the point spread razor thin. Missouri has looked brilliant at times but has not put it all together, while inconsistencies on offense have been the story of the season for the Longhorns.
The Tigers are not on the playoff radar of many at this point, but a win this weekend would put them at the center of the conversation as well as pushing Texas to the brink.
No. 6 Kentucky @ No. 13 Tennessee: 5:15 p.m. CST
The Wildcats have been the story of the season, but as a young team who has never really contended before, it’s going to be a long road this month to make the CFP. It starts in Knoxville where, despite their ranking, Kentucky is a touchdown underdog to the Vols in Neyland Stadium. This may be their biggest challenge yet, and while they have not turned the ball over since the Alabama game in week two, this is a new level of defense the Wildcats face in Tennessee.
This is a massive game in the SEC standings and a chance for Kentucky to prove they are for real as well as the Vols to make a huge statement.
No. 1 Miami @ No. 11 Notre Dame: 6:30 p.m. CST
The Hurricanes might be the top team in the nation right now, but the Irish are a rather significant favorite in this game. The first edition of the CFP rankings revealed Notre Dame essentially has to win this game to make the field, and Miami meanwhile is missing their all-world superstar wide receiver Malachi Toney which makes a massive difference in their offense.
This is a massive game and one of the biggest of the year, and if Notre Dame can take care of business, it’s going to be a huge development in the playoff race.
No. 2 Georgia @ No. 10 Ole Miss: 6:30 p.m. CST
This is certainly the weekend to pull out the second and third televisions and drag them into your living room, because the night slot features three must watches going on at the same time, and the Dawgs and Rebels might be the biggest one. Ole Miss has the longest home winning streak in the nation and ended Georgia’s season last year in the Sugar Bowl behind a massive performance from Trinidad Chambliss.
He will try to do that once again and take a massive step towards getting the Rebels to the SEC Championship game for the first time in program history.
