Jeff Sessions renews push for debate with Tommy Tuberville after runoff postponement

Even though Alabama Republican voters will not go to the polling precinct until mid-July to cast a ballot in the U.S. Senate GOP primary runoff because of the coronavirus threat, former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, one of the two competitors in the contest, is still calling on his opponent former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville to participate in a debate.

Polling prior to Gov. Kay Ivey’s decision to postpone the runoff election showed Tuberville with an advantage over Sessions. Tuberville also had the added benefit of President Donald Trump’s endorsement headed into the then-March 31 contest.

During an interview with Huntsville radio’s “The Jeff Poor Show” on WVNN, Sessions said there was no pause for him despite the additional time, and insisted the additional time would allow for a debate.

Sessions also emphasized the threat China poses to the U.S. health care system, which was revealed with disruptions as a result of coronavirus.

“No time out — we’ve got plenty of time to have Tommy Tuberville debate,” Sessions said. “Maybe he can learn a few things between now and July. But we’ve got some issues to ask about — something that a United States Senator has to be able to do and know. I think we’re going to maintain that challenge for sure. And we’re going to raise some of the key issues that need to be discussed in the Senate, in which one of them … is China, its unfair trade practices, the unbelievable threat over medicine and what we need to do about that.”

“We cannot, cannot, cannot allow China to produce our critical medicines,” he continued. “And they have already threatened they may not give them to us. It’s just a wake-up call. It can easily be done in the United States. It costs very little more. The pill — the actual making of the pill is almost all machine. It could be made here for just a fraction, if any, more expensive. Basically, the cost of a pill is the research and developing it, and the testing and making sure it doesn’t have bad side effects.”
