It has been a tough year so far to be a fan of the Auburn Tigers. As the team sits at 2-5 and 0-4 in SEC play with a road trip to Lexington on the docket this week, the Tigers are a team desperate for a good showing.
Within that 0-4 start to conference play in addition to the loss against California at home, it’s not as if Auburn is getting dominated the entire game. They just simply keep finding new ways to lose. Nothing illustrates that fact better than a jaw-dropping statistic revealed by a user on X.
While just 27 offenses in the country average at least 6.5 yards per play and only 29 defenses are allowing 5.0 yards per play or fewer, there are only seven teams in the country who are doing both.
The seven teams are No. 23 undefeated Army, undefeated No. 13 Indiana, one loss No. 4 Ohio State, two loss No. 18 Ole Miss, undefeated No. 3 Penn State, one loss No. 5 Texas, and you guessed it, 2-5 unranked Auburn.
Auburn is moving the ball on offense and limiting opposing units on defense at a rate that only some of the best teams in the country are doing and yet they have found a way to win just two of their seven games in almost impressive fashion. If this doesn’t illustrate that Auburn can’t get out of their own way, I’m not sure what will.
