Work is underway on Irondale’s new Costco, and the city hopes to welcome shoppers by Thanksgiving 2028.

Mayor James Stewart Jr. told Bham Now the anticipated opening is mid-to-late 2028, with Thanksgiving as the goal. The warehouse near Grants Mill Road and Interstate 459 will give Birmingham-area shoppers a second Costco location, joining the existing store in Hoover.

According to the report, the land has been cleared, and crews were in their second week of blasting as of mid-October. Stewart said some of the site work could be slightly ahead of schedule.

Preparing for the new store also means getting nearby roads ready for more traffic. Stewart said that road realignment work is expected to begin in about a year.

The county will handle changes to Grantswood Road and Mercedes Way for the Costco entrance, while the Alabama Department of Transportation will work on the I-459 entrance and exit ramps.

The work comes several months after Irondale finalized the agreements needed to move the development forward in May. Getting to that point took years of negotiations and a 300-day due diligence process.

Plans call for a 152,000-square-foot warehouse and a self-service gas station. City officials have estimated the development will bring between 200 and 300 jobs to Irondale.
