INSIDER: Alabama expected to name Keelon Russell starting QB next week

The Alabama Crimson Tide may be ready to name a starting quarterback.

Following a second scrimmage of fall camp on Thursday, head coach Kalen DeBoer played it cool during his press conference, telling media that the coaching staff is going to continue to evaluate things over the weekend and said a decision is coming soon.

DeBoer’s words were followed up by a report from major college football insider Pete Nakos and Chris Low of On3, both of whom expect sophomore former five-star Keelon Russell to be named the starter by next week.

“Would expect Kalen DeBoer to name Keelon Russell the starter by early next week,” Low tweeted. “He’s been excellent this preseason and gives Alabama more playmaking ability at the QB position. Throws a really nice ball.”

DeBoer seemed to shut down a notion of a two quarterback system as well when asked, saying that while he is confident in both, one will be picked.

“We can go win with either one of them,” he said via Bama Online. “I feel very comfortable with that. Obviously, we gotta pick one, and we will. We will pick one, and we’ll continue to work through that here in the days ahead.”

Reading the writing on the wall, it seems like Alabama fans can count on an announcement here early next week. By the sounds of it, that announcement is going to be that Russell winds up being named as the starter.
