It wasn’t your typical traffic delay on I-65 this week, as a crash in Limestone County left crews cleaning up a highway covered in spicy chicken wings.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), the crash occurred near mile marker 358 outside Athens, where spilled cargo prompted lane closures, while subsequent reporting from WAFF 48 confirmed the roadway has since been cleared and all lanes reopened with traffic returning to normal.

Officials said one of the trucks was carrying spicy chicken wings, which spilled across the southbound lanes and contributed to the extended cleanup effort.

At the time of the crash, the right southbound lane was closed as crews worked to clear debris, with at least one lane remaining open to traffic. Drivers were advised to reduce speed and expect delays during the cleanup, which was expected to last several hours.

Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division monitored the scene as crews worked to restore safe driving conditions.

No additional details about injuries or the cause of the crash have been released.
