A Hoover police officer was injured and one civilian was killed during an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning at a residence on River Lake Drive, according to the Hoover Police Department.

Police said officers responded at 7:49 a.m. on February 8, 2026, to a home on a report of a mentally disturbed person. Authorities said that upon arrival, a 38-year-old male suspect brandished a handgun at a nearby family member and began firing.

According to Hoover Police, one responding officer was shot and transported to a hospital in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect’s family member was also struck by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was transported to a hospital in stable condition, police said.

Because officers discharged their weapons, the investigation has been turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation. Hoover Police said any additional questions about the case should be directed to ALEA.

“The Hoover Police Department would ask for continued prayers for all affected by today’s events,” the department said in a statement. “We would also like to thank our community for the outpouring of support and the numerous law enforcement agencies who responded and offered assistance.”
