MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Department of Education on Wednesday released its latest list of public schools that have been identified as “failing.” Seventy-six schools find themselves with that unenviable distinction this year, up from 66 in 2015.
The list of failing schools is compiled using the student scores on the ACT Aspire standardized test, which is administered each year from third through eighth grade, then again in tenth grade.
The implications of the “failing” label are significant.
Under the Alabama Accountability Act, the state’s landmark school choice law, students in failing schools are permitted to transfer to non-failing public or private schools. Families could also qualify for tax credits to help them pay for private school tuition.
