U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) believes that Lindsey Graham “would be proud” of his sister for being willing to stand in for him in Congress.

Britt was standing behind Darline Graham Nordone as she was being sworn in as South Carolina’s next Senator. Governor Henry McMaster announced the appointment Monday after President Donald Trump made the suggestion on Truth Social.

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) died Saturday night from a “brief and sudden illness,” his office said. He was 71. The preliminary cause was aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to the D.C. medical examiner.

“Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him,” Darline Graham said during her appointment ceremony. “My brother was the most amazing person, outstanding leader and just a genuinely good man.”

Britt reiterated her support for Darline while speaking with Fox News on Tuesday.

“[Lindsey] always said that his greatest accomplishment was the way that Darline turned out,” she said. “I had an opportunity to have dinner with Darline and obviously get to know Lindsey’s family and this is a really big moment. Her walking on the Senate floor today to be sworn in—he would be so proud.”

The filing period for a special primary election begins on July 21, with the special election to follow on August 11. A runoff will be held August 25 if necessary. The general election will still be held November 3.
