Governor Kay Ivey declares State of Emergency ahead of severe weather threat in Alabama

Governor Kay Ivey has declared a state of emergency for Alabama ahead of a dangerous weather system expected to bring severe storms, including strong winds, hail, lightning, and possible tornadoes, to the state.

The emergency declaration takes effect at 2:00 p.m. CDT on March 14, 2025, and will remain in place until further notice.

According to the National Weather Service, the storms are forecasted to begin Friday evening and continue through the early hours of Sunday, March 16.

The system is expected to cause significant damage to property and infrastructure, disrupt essential utilities, and pose serious risks to public safety.

Governor Ivey activated the Alabama Emergency Operations Plan, directing all state agencies to assist in disaster response and recovery efforts. The Alabama National Guard is on standby for deployment if needed. The Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) will assess storm damages and coordinate requests for state and federal assistance.

The governor emphasized that the storm presents extraordinary conditions of disaster and peril that will require a coordinated statewide response. She urged Alabama residents to stay informed, take precautions, and follow local emergency advisories as the storm progresses.

“The state of Alabama is at risk for potentially dangerous, severe weather throughout this weekend, so it is critical that everyone stays very aware of their local forecasts,” Ivey said.

“Now is the time to make any preparations and have a plan, should the weather conditions become dangerous. Certainly, we are no stranger to Mother Nature’s wrath, but I encourage Alabamians to be vigilant beginning tonight. Stay weather aware and stay safe!”

Local school districts have been granted authority to close schools based on local conditions. Schools affected by the storm can request calendar adjustments from the State Superintendent of Education to avoid penalties for missed days. Similarly, state government offices may close at the governor’s discretion, with instructions to be communicated as needed.

The emergency declaration will remain in effect until further notice or until the governor issues an official termination of the state of emergency.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local news stations, official state websites, and emergency alerts for real-time updates.
