Governor Kay Ivey has proclaimed Aug. 1, 2026, as Will Roberts Day in Alabama, honoring the life of 15-year-old William “Will” Roberts, whose courageous battle with Stage IV osteosarcoma inspired thousands across Alabama and the nation.
Will, the son of Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Bureau of Investigation Capt. Jason Roberts and his wife, Brittney, died July 23 following what Ivey described as a long and courageous battle with bone cancer. His story united people across Alabama and the nation, drawing prayers, encouragement and financial support that helped his family pursue experimental treatment in California.
“Alabama is remembering Will as a brave young man whose courage inspired us all,” Ivey said. “God has called him home, where he is healed and with our Savior. I am proud to honor his life well-lived by officially proclaiming Will Roberts Day in the state of Alabama. He inspired me, and he inspired us all.”
In the official proclamation, Ivey said Will’s courage, unwavering faith and joyful spirit touched the hearts of countless people. She wrote that his journey united strangers in prayer, encouragement and hope while demonstrating remarkable strength in the face of unimaginable challenges.
The proclamation also recognizes the generosity of thousands of supporters whose donations helped make Will’s experimental treatment possible. Ivey described him as “a beloved son, a brave fighter, a kind friend, a devoted Christian, a joyful spirit and much more,” saying his life became an inspiration not only to those who knew him personally but also to people across the nation.
The governor’s office also said Will remained a source of encouragement to those around him throughout his illness, often finding reasons to smile and encourage someone else despite the challenges he faced.
Ivey designated Aug. 1 as Will Roberts Day “in honor of his life and in recognition of every child who has battled or is battling childhood cancer across our state.” The proclamation says Will’s courage serves as an inspiration “to be strong, keep hope and have faith.”
Roberts was diagnosed with Stage IV osteosarcoma on Jan. 9, 2025. During his battle, he underwent surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and experimental treatments, eventually traveling to California for specialized care. After losing a leg to cancer, he learned to walk again, and his determination inspired thousands who followed his journey through news coverage and social media.
Will’s funeral will be held Saturday, Aug. 1 — the same day designated as Will Roberts Day. Public visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon at the Shelton State Community College Gymnasium in Tuscaloosa, with funeral services immediately following at noon. Burial will follow at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Ralph, according to Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home.
