Another week is here on the college football calendar, and while all eyes will certainly be on the showdown in Tuscaloosa between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs, there is another huge slate from top to bottom across the country.
The sport has continued to deliver week after week, and this Saturday is not going to be any different.
In the SEC, there will be great matchups every week, but with Alabama playing in the game of the week and Auburn on a bye, here are the four games you need to be paying attention to in this conference while getting ready for the main event at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Texas A&M @ No. 14 Missouri: 11:00 a.m. CST
The Tigers are coming off their incredible blowout victory over Florida last week which sent shockwaves across the conference, and while the Aggies are struggling badly right now, this is still a point spread of just over a field goal with a ton of talent on their roster. Missouri will be trying to prove they are for real, while Texas A&M will be trying to keep their heads above water and prevent what could be a complete disaster of a season.
It’s a great appetizer to begin your college football Saturday this week.
No. 1 Texas vs. Oklahoma: 2:30 p.m. CST (Dallas)
The Longhorns and Sooners get together for the renewal of one of the best rivalries in the sport for the Red River Shootout in the Cotton Bowl, and this matchup in particular is a fascinating one. Despite Oklahoma being completely inept on offense, Texas is only favored by around a touchdown and has had some offensive issues of their own. Given that the Longhorns may have the best defense in the nation, it’s quite the task for the Sooners, but rivalry games add an element of the unknown.
If Oklahoma can create an early touchdown or, even better, score with their defense, perhaps this one could wind up being another classic between the two historic programs.
No. 9 Ole Miss @ Vanderbilt: 2:30 p.m. CST
The Rebels have not been seen since they were absolutely beaten down by Florida coming off their huge LSU win, and it’s an interesting challenge in Nashville coming off the bye week. Ole Miss is less than a 10 point favorite against an upstart Vanderbilt team led by a true freshman in Jared Curtis who has shown he has the talent to move the ball down the field, but this is a great measuring stick for Ole Miss.
If they can get back on track and defeat the Commodores like they should, they will be right back in the SEC and College Football Playoff discussion.
No. 10 LSU @ Kentucky: 6:00 p.m. CST
This is the game of the week outside of Alabama vs. Georgia with the Wildcats hungry to make a statement after they were dropped out of the top-25 last week despite a comeback road victory over South Carolina. This Kentucky team has shown that it is dangerous, with the first half against Alabama as well as a drubbing of Texas A&M on the road, and LSU has quietly been scaling things up since their loss to Ole Miss.
It’s a statement opportunity for Lane Kiffin with the Tigers favored by just over a touchdown, but Kentucky will certainly not be a pushover. This one is worth pulling out a second screen for during the Alabama game.
