Former Republican Party Chairman and longtime GOP activist J. Elbert Peters died Thursday. He was 90.

“With today’s passing of J. Elbert Peters at age 90, the Alabama Republican Party lost one of its founders and most loyal members,” said Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth on X. A devoted conservative and even more devoted family man, Elbert set an example that others would do well to follow. I’m thankful to have known him.”

“Alabama has lost a genuine leader and a good man,” said U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn). “Suzanne and I are praying for family of Elbert Peters.”

“I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of my predecessor, mentor, and friend, Elbert Peters,” said Republican Party Chairman John Wahl. “Chairman Peters had a true servant’s heart, working tirelessly on behalf of our Party for decades. Please join me in praying for his loved ones at this difficult time.”

“Elbert Peters was a pioneering giant of the Alabama Republican Party and a tremendous American whose legacy of service and statesmanship will live on for generations to come,” said U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery). “His loved ones are in our prayers.”

“Elbert Peters was a giant in the Alabama Republican Party. He blazed a trail & fought for the conservative cause so that others, including me, could be successful,” said Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen. “He was a man of immense courage. It was a privilege to know him.”

“My grandfather, J. Elbert Peters, passed away earlier this afternoon,” said his grandson David Wisdom. “He was 90 years old. We are proud of the life my grandfather lived, we are thankful for the influence he has had in our lives, and we are assured we will see him again.”
