Vernon Barnett, a well-known public servant to the people of Alabama, has been named the new executive director of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.
Barnett will officially step into the role on May 18, succeeding Mark Jackson, who retired last month after leading the organization for 12 years in the association’s first executive leadership transition since 2014.
Before retiring from the role in 2026, Barnett has spent the last nine years leading the Alabama Department of Revenue under Governor Kay Ivey. Barnett helped oversee major tax policy initiatives and statewide programs affecting Alabama taxpayers.
Prior to joining the Revenue Department in 2017, he also served in several senior state government roles, including senior counsel for the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, chief deputy commissioner of the Alabama Department of Corrections and deputy solicitor general in the Alabama Attorney General’s Office.
The new director shared his thoughts about the appointment. “The Medical Association represents thousands of physicians across our state, and I’m honored to step into this role,” said Barnett. “Physicians in Alabama are facing real challenges – from burdensome insurance requirements to workforce shortages, reimbursement pressures, and a demanding legal environment. The Medical Association will continue to be a strong voice for doctors and a partner in improving access to high-quality care for patients.”
Nina Ford Johnson, a pediatrician from Mobile and president of the organization, said Barnett’s background in state government and leadership made him the right choice for the role.
“Vernon brings a deep understanding of state government and a strong track record of leadership,” Dr. Ford Johnson said. “At a time when physicians and patients are facing increasing challenges, his leadership will help strengthen our advocacy and support for doctors across Alabama.”
The Medical Association of the State of Alabama is the state’s largest professional organization representing physicians and works to advance the practice of medicine, protect the physician-patient relationship and promote policies aimed at improving healthcare access and quality across Alabama.
