FDA makes morning-after pill available over the counter to 15-year-olds

The Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that the Plan B morning-after pill will now be available over the counter to any woman over the age of 15. They also said it no longer has to be kept behind pharmacy counters, but instead will be available alongside other contraceptives on pharmacy shelves.

Plan B One-Step was previously only available behind pharmacy counters, and buyers had to prove they were over seventeen years old to buy it without a prescription. Plan B’s manufacturer says they will begin over-the-counter sales in the next few months.

U.S. District Judge Edward Korman of New York previously ordered an end to age restrictions on the morning-after pill, but the FDA said their decision to lower the age limit was made independent of the court case.

The Center for Reproductive Rights, which sued over the age limits on the morning-after pill, told the Associated Press Tuesday that the FDA’s decision is not enough. They vowed to continue fighting for unlimited access for kids of all ages.

But most liberals are trumpeting the FDA’s decision as a victory for freedom of choice. After all, “choice” is their rallying cry — unless you’re talking about the choice of whether or not to join a union, or which school your child should attend, or whether or not to purchase health insurance, or what kind of lightbulbs you want to buy, or… you get the picture.

But when it comes to children having access to abortifacients, they want to provide all the choice we possibly can.

This is the country we now live in — one in which it’s legal for a teenager to kill their unborn child, but not to buy an incandescent light bulb.
