A Baldwin County man is facing a murder charge after authorities say a dispute between two cousins ended in a fatal shooting last week near Foley.

According to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence on Mannich Lane on the evening of June 22 after receiving a report of a shooting. When deputies arrived, they found 55-year-old Robert Keith Barlow suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Deputies rendered aid until paramedics arrived. Barlow was transported to Baldwin Health Medical Facility in Foley, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators detained 42-year-old Joseph Lee Smith at the scene while they conducted interviews and processed evidence. According to the sheriff’s office, investigators determined that Smith and Barlow, who were cousins, had been involved in a dispute before the shooting.

Authorities said Smith discharged a shotgun during the encounter, striking Barlow.

As a result of the investigation, Smith was arrested and charged with murder. He was transported to the Baldwin County Corrections Center, where he remained in custody last Tuesday.

WKRG reported that witnesses told investigators the dispute began over a Facebook post. Officials have not released details about the social media post.

According to the outlet, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Captain Justin Correa said the argument escalated quickly, and investigators found no indication that alcohol played a role.

“Some words were exchanged; eventually a firearm was introduced, and Mr. Barlow sacrificed his life,” Correa said.

“Words can hurt sometimes, but producing a firearm and shooting somebody over words is never worth it. This never ends well for either party,” Correa added.

“Now you have family that has lost a loved one and another family member is going to be in jail for murder.”

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active.
