Dobson: Where does Shomari Figures stand – Alabama or Washington?

With less than a week until the election, the Republican nominee for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District has been confidently speaking to a closer connection to the people in the state than her Democratic opponent.

Caroleene Dobson said Thursday that Democratic nominee Shomari Figures is more of a Washington D.C. insider than an actual resident of the district.

“[H]e maintained this million and a half dollar house right outside of DC,” Dobson said on the “The Jeff Poor Show” on FM Talk 106.5. “His wife is a lobbyist, aka consultant in DC, and, you know, he leases an apartment in the district. He made it very clear in the debate that he also has bought a house in mobile which, again, I think just indicates kind of how unconnected he is to the struggle that a lot of Alabamians are facing.”

While it’s not against the law for Figures to have lived outside the district to run for the congressional seat, Dobson is pointing his residency issues to portray him as out of touch with the average voter in Alabama.

“Forty-five percent of Alabamians, in a recent poll indicated that they struggle to pay weekly bills,” Dobson said. “And here’s this guy that that lives in a fancy house in DC, has lived and worked in DC and been part of that insider mentality for the past 12 years, coming down here two days before the filing deadline to run for this seat, and then head right back up to DC to maintain his fancy lifestyle. You know, it is a fantasy to pretend that he is going to spend time in Russell County and Crenshaw County, in Macon County, Bullock, Washington County, you know, the places that people most need access to their Federal House representatives.”

Dobson said she is better qualified to understand the issues affecting the people in her district.

“I just feel that rural America has been largely ignored over the past couple of decades, and we’ve got to turn that around as well,” she said. “As well as advocating for all the wonderful things going on in our city and infrastructure projects, like the port and
the airport and the bridge. But you know, it takes a holistic approach, and that has been my mission on this campaign, to really leave no corner of the district unvisited, and try to listen to every single voter in this district.”
