According to a story published by Russellville’s Franklin Free Press the day after Tuesday’s primary, whether you like Jim Bonner, the GOP state public service commission hopeful that lost his primary bid, or not – he isn’t going away.
As shown by the Alabama Secretary of State website, Bonner was defeated by a 215,540- 212,646 margin, which is roughly 0.68 percent of the vote. That’s just shy of the 0.5 percent margin required for an automatic recount according to Alabama election law.
Since the tally missed the 0.5 percent mark, the cost for the recount would go to the campaign asking for the recount. That could cost up to $1.5 million for a statewide election, as was reported last year when the losing Roy Moore campaign considered calling for a recount.
In the aftermath of Tuesday’s defeat, there are two GoFundMe pages launched on Bonner’s behalf. Only one of the two GoFundMe pages has money pledged, a total of $20. According to the page, the proceeds will be used to “help raise money for a recount.”

Last week, shortly after the Alabama Republican Party officially censured Bonner, party chairwoman Terry Lathan announced its candidate committee voted not to certify ballots cast for Bonner.
