While Democrats on Capitol Hill are grasping for reasons to block Senator Jeff Sessions from being appointed as the next U.S. Attorney General, one Democratic state lawmaker is stepping in to defend him.
State Senator Quinton Ross, Jr. (D- Montgomery) says that he has worked with Sessions for over twenty years, and their relationship has been a positive one. On Wednesday, he issued a press release saying that he believes the Alabama Senator will be unbiased in his application of the law.
“We cannot ignore the fact that he is on the winning team,” Sen. Ross said. “No matter what side of the political spectrum you are on.”
“I have worked with Sen. Sessions on education policy and securing federal funding for our schools,” Ross said. “Additionally, I have spent time with him at the Magic City Classic and at Heritage Barbershop in Montgomery. I know him personally and all of my encounters with him have been for the greater good of Alabama.”
Sen. Ross said that since being nominated by the Trump Administration, he has been in close communication with Sessions. He believes that Sessions will be “accessible” to his constituents, adding that he has confidence in the Senator’s personal values.
“We’ve spoken about everything from Civil Rights to race relations and we agree that as Christian men our hearts and minds are focused on doing right by all people,” Sen. Ross said.
“We both acknowledge that there are no perfect men, but we continue to work daily to do the right thing for all people.”
There is little doubt that Senator Sessions will be confirmed as the next Attorney General. Republicans will only need 52 votes in the Senate body- an advantage given to the GOP thanks to a Harry Reid-led unilateral change from a few years ago that eliminated the 60-vote requirement for presidential nominations.
