A new program at the DeKalb County Jail is giving both inmates and shelter dogs a second chance. Through a partnership between the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the DeKalb County Animal Adoption Center, inmates will help train dogs to improve their chances of being adopted.

Each month, selected inmates will work with a new shelter dog, teaching them basic obedience and socialization skills such as leash training and commands like “sit” and “stay.” Organizers believe the program will not only help shelter dogs find loving homes but also provide inmates with a sense of purpose and responsibility and a way to reduce stress.

“We are so excited about this program and all the benefits that will come with it,” said Sheriff Nick Welden. “Each dog will be house-trained and learn basic obedience skills before they go home with you.”

“This is an amazing opportunity for our inmates and a great way to boost overall morale within our facility.”

By providing training and structure, the program aims to give both the inmates and the dogs a fresh start—one paw at a time.
