DeBoer warns potential portal players: ‘The grass is definitely not greener’

The Alabama Crimson Tide has wrapped up spring practice and now turns its attention to the spring transfer portal window — a period that head coach Kalen DeBoer, and many others, find increasingly chaotic and misguided.

DeBoer hasn’t signaled any urgent plans to bring in new talent through the portal. Still, across the country, college football insiders expect another wave of high-profile players to enter in pursuit of lucrative NIL deals.

When DeBoer took over last season, he had to navigate the risk of losing players to the portal without yet having the ability to add new talent himself. That reality required a delicate approach — treating the roster with, as some might say, kid gloves.

However, those who are still in the program are there now because they believe in DeBoer and his vision.

As a result, DeBoer when asked this week issued a strong warning to any of his players who may be thinking about leaving that they are not going to find a better place than Alabama to achieve their goals both personally and as a team as well as getting to the next level.

He expressed confidence that Alabama is not going to lose its talent this spring and that while you can’t ever know for sure, they have reason to stay.

“They can have perspective on what they really, truly have here at Alabama,” DeBoer said.

“And it’s special, whether it’s the resources that they have and the people that they have around them, in the training room, in the weight room. The coaching staff, I think, is elite as well. And so these guys are getting an experience that they should not take for granted. We can talk about the stories of guys who have come in and said how great it is here, or guys that have left and, you know, maybe even wishing they could come back. Be careful what you ask for. The grass is definitely not greener on the other side.”

The spring portal window opens on Wednesday, but if DeBoer is correct then don’t count on much news out of Tuscaloosa.
