DeBoer on first practice: ‘Full of energy and excitement’

If you ever needed an official sign that signified a new era in Tuscaloosa, Kalen DeBoer taking the podium as Alabama’s head coach following the conclusion of the first spring practice might just be it.

DeBoer spoke on a litany of topics including how the practice went, new helmet communication, Jalen Milroe and the quarterback room, and more.

And while there wasn’t any huge takeaway from the 15-minute presser, the fact that we have finally arrived at spring football with a new face of the program is notable in itself.

“Man, all of a sudden just like that the first practice is over,” DeBoer said. “It was a great day out there, first practices always are. Full of energy. Full of excitement. This came fast and practice went fast.

“I was proud of our staff and players for really understanding what we were trying to accomplish today. Not just the execution of the playing field with concepts and plays but the transitions. It’s new for everyone … I really just thought it came together in a really nice way.

“We wanna create those habits that we call championship habits, and I think they did a really nice job with that today.”

DeBoer also addressed the quarterback situation, but essentially said that while there is competition, Milroe took the first team reps.

“You want competition, right? So the competition is always gonna be there,” DeBoer said. “Someone had to take the first reps today, and Jalen did. He’s putting everything into it.”
