Deadly crash on I-65 in Butler County causes massive pile-up and prolonged road closure

A deadly multi-vehicle crash involving at least 15 vehicles brought Interstate 65 southbound to a standstill for nearly 10 hours on Tuesday. The collision, exacerbated by icy road conditions from a sweeping winter storm, occurred around 12:15 p.m. near the 122-mile marker, between the Georgiana (Exit 114) and Greenville/Pine Apple (Exit 128) exits.

Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon confirmed one fatality in the crash, though additional details about the victim and circumstances remain unavailable.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reported that icy conditions significantly hampered efforts to clear the scene and reopen the interstate. Crews worked throughout the afternoon and evening, finally clearing the wreckage by 9:55 p.m. Despite the removal of vehicles, authorities report that the affected section of I-65 is still impassable due to lingering snow and ice.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) detoured southbound traffic for hours at Exit 130. Video footage from WSFA shows vehicles being rerouted at Exit 128 while emergency personnel and cleanup crews battled freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions.

ALEA and local officials are urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, reduce speed, and exercise caution during the ongoing wintry conditions.

As of Wednesday morning, efforts to ensure the roadway’s safety are ongoing. Updates on the situation are expected as authorities continue to monitor the weather and assess road conditions.
