Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney is known these days in the Yellowhammer State as the guy who beat Nick Saban in two national title games and kept the Crimson Tide’s dynasty from being even more ridiculously successful than it already was.
But while it may be easy to forget now, Swinney once played for the Tide. The Pelham native walked onto Alabama’s team and lettered in three seasons as a wide receiver, catching seven passes during his collegiate career. He was a part of Gene Stallings’ 1992 national championship team, the first team to win a title since Bear Bryant’s retirement.
Swinney’s success has led to countless accolades, but the most recent one is particularly special.
Over the weekend, Swinney was inducted into the inaugural class of the Pelham Athletics Hall of Fame. He spoke to ABC 33/40 about how his faith has played a role in his life.

“God has had his hand on my life for a long time,” Swinney said. “I’ve had a lot of great moments in my life, everything great in my life has come through team. My wife is a Pelham grad, we grew up together from 1st grade up and we’re going on 31 years of marriage…just so many great people, teachers, coaches, and mentors…Hopefully, I’ve made some right decisions along the way. Just God’s favor. God’s plan for my life. I’ve just tried to honor Him as I’ve gone about my business.”
Swinney will try to keep winning titles for the Tigers, but more importantly, has pledged to continue speaking proudly about his faith and God’s blessings.
