Chairman John Wahl: ALGOP’s unwavering commitment to lowering taxes

John Wahl

In Alabama, our commitment to conservative values isn’t just rhetoric—it’s reflected in real actions that make life better for the people of our state. The Alabama Republican Party has a strong track record of defending the rights and freedoms of every individual. One of our primary goals has always been ensuring that hardworking Alabama families get to keep more of what they earn.

Today, as Alabamians face rising costs and economic pressures, the ALGOP Steering Committee reaffirmed the Party’s long-standing commitment to lower taxes by passing a resolution that calls for decisive action to reduce the tax burden on our communities.

Our conservative principles have long taught us that lower taxes empower economic growth, promote fiscal responsibility, and provide much-needed relief for families struggling to make ends meet.

By reducing the tax burden, we enable Alabamians to invest in their families, fuel local economies, and create opportunities that attract new businesses to our state.

That’s why the Alabama GOP is proud to be working hand-in-hand with the state legislature on a comprehensive package of four bills designed to provide nearly $200 million in annual tax cuts. These measures are meant to keep more money in the pockets of every single person in Alabama.

Cutting the Grocery Tax

One of the key components of our tax relief strategy is an immediate additional 1% reduction in the state’s grocery tax—bringing the total reduction to 2% since 2023. This move will save Alabama families an estimated $123 million each year on groceries alone.

In total, the 2% grocery tax cut represents a $246 million yearly reduction, easing the everyday financial strain on households across the state.

Supporting Seniors on Fixed Incomes

Our seniors deserve to enjoy the fruits of their lifelong work without the burden of excessive taxes. That’s why one of our bills doubles the state’s tax exemption for withdrawals from retirement plans—from $6,000 to $12,000.

This important change is projected to cut taxes by $44.8 million annually, providing critical relief for those on fixed incomes.

Lowering the Income Tax

Recognizing that every dollar counts, our package also includes provisions to ease the income tax burden. By increasing the income floor, expanding the standard deduction, and raising the income threshold for the maximum dependent exemption, we’re set to reduce state income taxes for Alabamians by an additional $23.8 million each year. This measure ensures that more hardworking citizens keep a larger share of their earnings.

These bills are more than just numbers—they represent our commitment to a government that works for its people. In these challenging economic times, we stand united as a party dedicated to the principles of limited government and fiscal prudence.

We remain focused on delivering policies that not only uphold our conservative ideals but also make a real, measurable difference in the lives of our fellow Alabamians. With strong leadership and a clear vision, Alabama will continue to be a beacon of economic freedom and opportunity.

The Alabama Republican Party stands strong for tax cuts. We will keep fighting to ensure that every Alabamian—whether a small business owner, a hardworking family member, or a retired citizen—can thrive in a state that values liberty, hard work, and fiscal responsibility.
