Celebrating second chances: Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles applauds 33 graduates

The Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles announced 33 inmates graduated last week from a rehabilitation program offered through the Tuscaloosa Day Reporting Center. The program provides prisoners with a combination of counseling, educational training, and close supervision.

A ceremony was held at the Shelton State Community College gymnasium with family members and friends invited.

Director of the Bureau, Cam Ward, spoke at the event about the significance of maintaining a positive mindset and shared an important acronym for those in the program.

The acronym discussed by Ward spells out HOW with the ‘H’ standing for ‘Honesty’, ‘O’ standing for ‘Open-Mindedness’, and ‘W’ standing for ‘Willingness’.

“Honesty is not just being honest with your loved ones, but honesty is also being honest with yourself,” said Ward. “You also must be open-minded to accept criticism and correction. Lastly, you must be willing to do whatever it takes to get your life back on track.”

“Now that’s HOW we get over the hurdles of life.”

The Bureau released a statement following the ceremony applauding those who made it through the program.

“These 33 graduates of the Tuscaloosa DRC have demonstrated remarkable dedication,” the bureau said. “Each of their journeys are powerful examples of the impact of transformative support, education, and personal commitment. The Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles is proud of each and every one of them.”

“We proudly support their re-entrance into society.”
