As one of only two Republican mothers in the U.S. Senate with school-age children, Alabama’s Katie Britt is in a unique position to discuss the process of balancing a legislative career in Washington with a personal home life in Montgomery.
On Saturday, during a Fox News interview with Lara Trump, Britt spoke about her professional duties as a lawmaker, but noted that her most valued responsibility is being a good mother and spouse.
“I’ve been really honest about it. I struggled a great deal,” Britt (R-Montgomery) told Trump. “And I think it was that balance that you’re always striving for, but it’s really hard to create. Being a wife and a mom is the most important thing to me. Being away from my children, missing milestones in their lives, it’s hard.”
“We know that we’re doing this so that they have a better opportunity, but it doesn’t mean that that balance isn’t hard. But at the end of the day, I think this is what all moms are doing. We’re literally all just doing the best we can.”

The Senator also used the opportunity to advocate for the More Opportunities for Mothers to Succeed (MOMS) Act. The legislation, sponsored by Britt, would provide increased resources and support for women during the more challenging phases of motherhood, including prenatal, postpartum, and early childhood development.
As the party of life and the party of parents, I couldn’t be prouder to lead legislation that delivers on our promises to hardworking families. The MOMS Act stands for More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed – exactly what this bill would do. pic.twitter.com/oBE8VWqfUS

“The MOMS Act takes a comprehensive look at both prenatal and postpartum and also early childhood development,” Britt said. “The first part of the bill actually puts all of the resources for pregnancy right there in one place. So you can actually go to pregnancy.gov, and you can find all the resources right there at your fingertips. Additionally, it has some grant programs to make sure that we’re getting telehealth to different places.”
“We want women, no matter their ZIP code, to be supported in this journey. So that is critically important, whether it’s for mental health services or actually services throughout your pregnancy.”

Trump, also a mother of school-aged children, asked Britt what she wanted most for Mother’s Day.
“I just want to hang out with my children and my husband and just appreciate that time. You realize when you do a job like this and you do have to be away during the week, how precious that is and how precious those moments are,” Britt noted. “And just the conversation around the kitchen table that you long for and that you kind of wait for. I appreciate all that they do and all that they give up to allow me the honor to fight for our nation and to fight for the great state of Alabama.
