In recent years the Chinese Communist Party along with affiliated entities and officials have been able to purchase huge tracts of American land with very little outside attention or interference. Though the purpose of the acquisitions remains unclear, lawmakers in Washington D.C. are now fighting against future purchases they believe could lead to a possible national security crisis.
A leading voice against the growing Chinese ownership of American land is Senator Katie Britt, who joined her colleagues Senators Tom Cotton and Kevin Cramer on Wednesday, in reintroducing the Not One More Inch or Acre Act. The bill would ban any Chinese national or entity from owning American land.
“One acre of American farmland owned by the Chinese Communist Party is one acre too many,” said Britt, the ranking member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Appropriations. “The CCP’s strategic acquisition of farmland, particularly near our military installations, isn’t just a national security risk, it is a threat to our economic and food security. The Not One More Inch or Acre Act provides President Trump with the necessary authority to safeguard American interests, secure our agriculture industry, and protect our homeland to ensure American farmland stays out of the hands of our adversaries.”
Not one inch. Not one acre. That’s how much American land should be owned by the CCP. Proud to reintroduce this critical legislation with @TomCottonAR and @kevincramer.https://t.co/2AeNWxirpr

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has reported that as of last year, China owned approximately 350,000 acres of farmland across 27 states. Much of the land owned by Chinese interests is in close proximity to U.S. military installations.
Additionally, Fox News reported that Smithfield Foods, which has a Chinese parent company, makes up the largest share of Chinese-owned land with 110,000 acres.
The Not One More Inch or Acre Act would specifically:
- Prohibit citizens of the People’s Republic of China, members of the CCP, or any individual or entity acting on their behalf from purchasing any real estate in the United States.
- Require the sale of any property owned or influenced by the CCP that the President determines to be a national security risk.
- Set a minimum penalty for foreign investors who fail to comply with USDA reporting requirements.
